Offerings, Neak Pean
Offerings of Cambodian banknotes, carrying the image of Angkor Wat, stuffed into the mouth of a fountainhead at the temple of Neak Pean ('Intertwined serpents'), Angkor. The late-12th century island temple was originally a Hindu site, but adapted to Buddhism during the reign of Jayavarmman VII. The small square artificial lake may represent the sacred Himalayan Lake Anavatapa, famous for its miraculous healing properties. A bodhisattva is a being who has achieved Enlightenment but vows to remain to help human salvation.
