17422.01 Stone Plaza
In the tradition of the austere Zen 'dry-stone garden' (karesansui) without plants, Japanese architect Kengo Kuma designed this 'stroll garden' of andesite stone and water in Tochigi prefecture, north of Tokyo. Called Stone Plaza, the commission was for a company that quarries and sells the local pale gray stone. The geometry of the planes replaced grass, trees and rocks.
