Nara House
‘House in Nara’ (Hachisuka-tei), Kashiba, Nara. Architect: Akira Sakamoto. Garden designer: Toshiya Ogino. A sliding screen opens in this tatami room to give a low, precisely framed view of a miniature garden with an island of moss sitting in a sea of white gravel. A single concealed spot throws a precisely attenuated beam onto a white wall, creating an illusion depth by mimicking a sky with the sun just below the horizon.
