The most sacred place of worship in Burma (Myanmar), and physically the most impressive, the Shwedagon Pagoda rise 300 feet and is plated with 8,688 slabs of solid gold. The tip of its spire is set with 5,448 diamonds and 2,317 precious stones — rubies, sapphire and topaz — including a huge emerald that catches the first and last rays of the sun.
