Pagan plain
The deserted ancient capital and religious city on the Irrawaddy River in the central plains of Burma contains more than two thousand temples, pagodas, monasteries and other religious structures. Founded in 849, the great period of temple construction began in the 11th century under King Anawrahta, and at its height Pagan had some 13,000 religious buildings.
