Dan Ge’er, an hour’s drive west of Qinghai’s capital Xining, was a Cha Ma Shan Du, a Tea Horse trading centre, set up by the Song government. Destroyed during the Cultural revolution, it has been completely rebuilt from scratch as a tourist attraction, and opened in 2009. Lifesize bronze figures depict scenes from its former life; the blue building beyond is a plaster replica of a foreign nineteenth centruy bank.
