Torii avenue

Torii avenue

Steps leading up to Hie shrine in Akasaka, Tokyo, lined with vermillion torii gates. Originally ancient Japanese gateways, torii ('spirit perch') became limited to Shinto shrines. They purify the pilgrim who passes through them along the sacred path to the shrine.
