Contrade horse.
A competing horse and keeper in Siena's annual Palio waits to enter a church for a blessing before the race. Ridden bareback, the horses race around the around the Piazza del Campo in the centre of the city. This is a competition between the contrade, medieval wards of the city, and is taken very seriously. The race is no holds barred, and even a riderless horse can win.
