The longest trade route in the Ancient World, from the 7th century, carrying tea from southwest China to Tibet, in return for war horses for the Imperial Army. Over a two-year shoot, beginning in 2009, I covered almost 3,000 km of trails through Yunnan, Sichuan, Tibet and Qinghai.

Sudan was Africa's largest country before the 2011 split. I shot everywhere, including Darfur, from 2003 to 2006, with old friends Tim Carney and Vicki Butler. Jimmy Carter kindly wrote the foreword, and said, "Michael Freeman's camera has caught the essential humanity of Sudan."

NOT a photographic book! Well, a few shots, but really it's one of those other creatures, a written book. It's the story of Cambodia, worked around the narrative of my many visits, beginning with  Return to the Killing Fields and Angkor.
